In the U.S., 40% of homeless youth identify as LGBTQ. Kicked Out published by Homofactus Press brings together the voices of current and former homeless LGBTQ youth and tells these forgotten stories of some of our nation’s most vulnerable citizens. Diverse contributors share stories of survival and abuse with poignant accounts of the sanctuary of community and the power of creating chosen families. Kicked out editor Sassafras Lowrey has developed a series of workshops and lectures based out of the idea that everyone has a story to tell and that the telling of stories is essential in the creation of social change. Sassafras is a passionate about facilitating workshops for marginalized LGBT populations. She is currently touring to colleges, community organizations, and homeless shelters offering lectures, workshops, and classroom talks about the epidemic of LGBTQ youth homelessness, the role of storytelling in creating social change.

Past appearances have included: Swarthmore College, Boston’s Write Here, Write Now, Sylvia’s Place Emergency LGBTQ youth shelter, NYAC’s national conference, Portland State University, The Portland Zine Symposium,  Bard  College, and the GLBTQ Online High School.
